The Public Accounts Committee of which I am a member published a report highlighting ongoing challenges for the project management of the Department for Work and Pensions’ programme to merge working age benefits into a single Universal Credit payment. I was interviewed about the committee’s findings and the way in which our conclusions were reached on the BBC’s World at One programme.

The report underlines the need for managers to effectively manage timescales and ensure value for taxpayers’ money. Implementing a project on the scale of Universal Credit will inevitably present challenges, however the department is right to be working towards a efficient and easy to use benefits system that is fair for everyone in the long term.
