It was fantastic to become a dementia friend at St Augustine’s Church in Wisbech last Friday afternoon.
Lisa Lowe, a dementia support worker led a workshop on dementia. I, along with other attendees learnt about the causes of dementia, how to support people living with it and why it is so important to tackle the stigma of dementia.
Dementia is caused by several diseases that affect the brain. The most common being Alzheimer’s, however, other diseases include vascular dementia, dementia with Lewy bodies and Pick’s disease.
As dementia can be caused by different diseases, the brain can be affected in different ways and at different rates, it does not merely cause forgetfulness. A person’s experience of dementia can wholly differ to another dementia sufferer’s, this is because circumstances, relationships and environment all play an important factor in the life of someone living with dementia.
Dementia is far too often considered as part of the aging process and this is not the case, it is a disease and younger people live with it also.
