Answers are needed on extraction plans
Residents in Chatteris, Mepal and Sutton deserve urgent answers regarding the impact of proposals for gravel and sand extraction on land between Chatteris and Ely, which have the potential to result in as many as 1,000 vehicles movements per day.
We already know that at this time of year mud on the road between Chatteris and Ely has been a problem, and we also know that there have been a number of very serious accidents including fatalities, on this stretch of road. It is good that the economy is growing and as the Government commits record investment into road improvements and building new homes, demand for gravel and sand extraction will rise.
The impact of this on local roads however needs to be managed sensibly.
Following discussions with Chatteris Town Council I have written to the Cambridgeshire County Council on behalf of Chatteris, Mepal and Sutton residents seeking an urgent clarification of what is proposed, the resulting vehicle movements, and what financial contribution to local communities either for road improvements or contributions to local facilities.
