I recently visited Wisbech Cricket and Hockey Club (WCHC) to meet with committee members, Bill Garner and Jane Peggs, to discuss plans for a new clubhouse.
The standard of cricket and hockey played at the club is impressive, as well as the vast membership. WCHC boasts seven hockey teams and four Saturday and three Sunday cricket teams, along with burgeoning youth training programmes.
However, the clubhouse is in a state of disrepair and the club are in desperate need of a new one. During our meeting a course of action was set to try and secure funding for the project, so sport can continue to flourish at the club.
It is clear that both the cricket and hockey club are delivering a high standard of sport but with facilities, particularly changing rooms, that need modernisation. I look forward to working with the committee to put their case centre stage with the various sports funding bodies. This is well timed given the recent discussions regarding a long lease with the National Trust. With this in mind I intend to host a series of meetings in the House of Commons with the national sports bodies to discuss what funding and expertise we can benefit from.
Improving the sporting facilities in the area still remains a high priority on my agenda. Securing a new clubhouse for WCHC will be a much needed and welcomed success.
