Headteachers often tell me that recruiting and retaining good teaching staff is a key challenge. As one of the twelve national opportunity areas following my intervention with the Department for Education, we are now seeing a number of schemes coming through to help local schools. One is A grant of up to £10,000 for recruitment incentives for any of our local schools struggling to recruit to vacant posts.
The grant will allow our schools to offer incentives to new recruits, including Professional Development (including Masters courses), learning visits to other schools (including in other parts of Europe), driving lessons, childcare vouchers and cover for personal days. Schools who have already benefited from this grant have reported that these incentives have helped to attract applicants who otherwise would not have applied to the school.
Attracting talent is key to unlocking the full potential of local children. Improving the offer our schools can make in a competitive market is great for continuing the improvements already being made locally in schools.
