This is welcome news, and follows four years of campaigning for services to be strengthened at North Cambs. Four years ago I launched the Treat Me Local campaign which pushed for investment in three sites, the North Cambs, Doddington and Ely hospital sites. This included bringing more services offered in major hospitals closer to home. My new role as Minister of State for Health with responsibility for hospitals and NHS finance and re-configuration allows me to have greater focus on this area, particularly in localising hospital care within communities which is better for patients both in terms of their care and in reducing travel times.
The Ely site has already made significant progress, and at Doddington we secured the reopening of care beds which had temporarily been closed. So I welcome this £8 million step forward at North Cambs. However I will be continuing to press local health commissioners to look again at expanding the number of appointments and the opening times at the Wisbech site to reduce the need to go to A&E at Kings Lynn.
I will be updating further as part of my ongoing discussions with local leaders, but this £8 million announcement shows whilst progress is slow, we are winning the argument and securing local improvements at our three hospital sites.
