Read to Succeed campaign is ready for your support

What it is, and why it is so important

I first launched the campaign in 2016 after teachers raised the difficulty of encouraging children to read during the school summer holidays which caused their literacy skills to suffer a dip after the school break.

The initiative supported by the Bishop of Ely, teachers, businesses and community groups, ensures that every Year 4 child in North East Cambridgeshire can have a new book to take home and keep. We selected this year group because it is the age at which children often begin to read more independently.

How successful has the Read to Succeed campaign been over the last three years?

  • ü Thanks to local support we raised enough money to buy over 5500 new books
  • ü That meant every single Year 4 child in North East Cambridgeshire received a new book to read during the summer holidays (and many Year 5 children too)
  • ü As a result, local libraries recorded an increase of almost 60% in children participating in the Summer Reading Challenge

To continue the success of this campaign I would like to ask for your support. Your donation will make a positive contribution towards encouraging children to read throughout the summer break and fostering a life-long love for reading. It is also an opportunity for you to showcase your business and highlight your contribution to the community.

I have partnered with the Norfolk Children’s Book Centre who is kindly supplying books for us at a reduced rate.

You can donate by cheque, electronic transfer or PayPal. Our cut-off date for receiving donations is Wednesday 1 May 2019.
