Be part of the pick! Join Fenland’s litter heroes for nationwide spring clean

The Great British Spring Clean is back! And Fenland District Council is encouraging residents and businesses to be part of the pick.

The Great British Spring Clean is back! And Fenland District Council is encouraging residents and businesses to be part of the pick.

The council is once again backing the nationwide Keep Britain Tidy Campaign, which brings people across the country together to clear up the litter that blights our environment.

Hundreds of Fenland residents were among the 370,000 #LitterHeroes which joined forces to collect litter at last year’s Great British Spring Clean – and this year promises to be even bigger and better! Instead of being held on just one weekend, the campaign has been expanded to a whole month, running from March 22 to April 23.

Rebecca Robinett, who co-ordinates the council’s 16 voluntary Street Pride groups, said: “The council’s Cleansing and Rapid Response team sweep the streets and collect litter seven days a week, 52 weeks of the year – cleaning over 11,000 miles of streets and 210 million square metres of open spaces.

“They are supported by our community-spirited Street Pride groups and individuals who volunteer their time to help keep their towns and villages clean throughout the year – but there is always more work to do. In an ideal world people wouldn’t drop litter. But if we all do our bit, we can make a real difference and clean up the environment on our doorstep.”

Anyone wanting to get involved in the Great British Spring Clean can either join one of the many Street Pride events in Fenland, or create their own and register it on the Great British Spring Clean website at: www.keepbritaintidy.org

The council can provide free litter picking equipment to anyone holding their own event and will arrange for bagged rubbish to be collected.

Events taking place in Fenland include:

  • Manea Street Pride – Saturday, March 23, 10am, meet at Meat & Eat Café
  • Elm Street Pride – Saturday, March 23, 10am, meet at the War Memorial
  • Parson Drove Street Pride – Saturday, March 30, 10am, meet at The Cage
  • Wimblington Street Pride – Saturday, March 30, 10am, meet at the Parish Hall
  • Chatteris Street Pride – Saturday, April 6, 10am, meet at Church Lane Car Park
  • Tydd St Giles Street Pride – Saturday, April 6, 10.30am, meet at Community Centre Car Park
  • Wisbech Street Pride with staff from packaging company Coveris – Thursday, April 18, 2pm, meet at The Boathouse

Anyone wanting to join one of the Street Pride events is welcome to turn up on the day – equipment will be provided. Alternatively, contact Rebecca Robinett on 01354 654321 or email streetpride@fenland.gov.uk, to be put in touch with the organiser.

Anyone wanting to organise their own litter pick can also contact Rebecca to request litter picking equipment.
