I was at Estover playing field with Gerry Roe of March Town FC and Katie Critchley from the Cambs FA to find out more about their bid to the Football Foundation for a new full size 3G pitch. Plans have been discussed for a number of years but, despite Covid, progress continues. March Town FC directors, who took over the running of the playing fields and pavilion a year ago have high ambitions to make the site a sporting hub for Fenland. They’re in it for the long term and understand that it will take time to grow a site of the calibre they want. It’s great to see such ambition. We came close to agreeing funding from the FA Facilities Fund a few years ago, but with a new pavilion and a clear plan for the future I feel optimistic. Grass roots sport is the lifeblood of a community with many benefits for health, both mental and physical, and social cohesion.
