For some time I’ve been having meetings with the Football Foundation and Cambridgeshire Football Association regarding 3G pitches. The Local Football Facility Plan for the area has highlighted a pipeline of priority projects including the provision for 3G artificial pitches, changing pavilions, natural grass pitches and small sided facilities which has the potential of injecting up to £10million into football facilities in Fenland and East Cambridgeshire over the next 10 years. Although Covid restrictions have been in place for much of the last year which temporarily halted fundraising activity for local clubs, they are now starting to regain momentum. With potential funding support from Sport England and the Football Foundation, work is ongoing with key partners to make these dreams a reality. Our schemes include Leverington 3G 9x9 pitch where fundraising is already underway; a full size 3G pitch in Estover, March, where a pitch application is already in; plans for a 3G first team pitch or a 9x9 training pitch at Wisbech St Mary; and a multi-use games area at Little Downham, which is being re-laid. Sport is a great catalyst to bring communities together, not to mention to the huge health and wellbeing benefits. I will continue to support our local sports clubs to make the case for the funding they need from national bodies.
